Artist statement:
Abstract Photopainting is a style that allows me to use light,
any light, as a color palette to paint works of art. Colors
and shapes are taken from photographs and are manipulated digitally
into abstract images with figurative qualities.
When I start working with these images I tend to let hands
and eyes do the thinking for me. This process is a dance with
the virtual canvas. I manipulate shapes, lines and colors
until I see something that sparks my attention. Once this
happens, I consciously develop the idea.
Once I finish the piece, limited variable editions of these
images are enlarged using a chemical photographic process
(Type C). The photograph, as we see it, is the finished painting.
This process allows me to expand the medium of photography
to an abstract painterly form.

I have worked with this style since 2000. I've exhibited
Abstract Photopaintings at The Point Art Center (Mukilteo,
WA), Triple J Cafe (Kirkland, WA), Edmonds Public Library (Edmonds, WA), the DOGhouse gallery (Seattle, WA), Bellevue City Hall (Bellevue, WA), Pushdot Studio (Portland, Oregon), Art Not Terminal Gallery (Seattle, WA), Red & Gold Gallery (Pionner Square, Seattle, WA), Theater Gallery (Madison, WI), Fyfe's Corner Bistro (Madison, WI), The National Council of La Raza Conference 2001 (Milwaukee,
WI) and Fiesta Hispana 2001 (Madison, WI). . This style of work is currently in the permanent collection
of the Wisconsin Union Galleries in Madison Wisconsin and
among several private collections.
